On the Job with Knobelsdorff Electric: Contractor Maximizes Efficiency with Wire Pulling Solutions

Pulling heavy medium voltage cable over long distances can be tiring and time consuming. What if you could cut installation time in half with less manpower? Go On the Job with Knobelsdorff Electric to see how they were able to execute a more efficient wire pull by partnering with Van Meter.

CHALLENGE: PULLING HEAVY MEDIUM VOLTAGE CABLE

Knobelsdorff reached out to Van Meter about procuring medium voltage cable for a project, but what started as a routine quote request for material turned into a discovery of how using the right equipment can save time and effort when pulling wire.

Knobelsdorff was tasked with refeeding a transformer with 500 MCM medium voltage cable from the utility. The job took nearly 1,000 feet of the 500 MCM cable. Normally, pulling 1,000 feet of such a large cable would require a lot of people, time and effort, but Van Meter partnered with Knobelsdorff to provide Southwire tools, pre-planning and jobsite services that significantly reduced their pulling effort and installation time.

SOLUTION: AN ALL-ENCOMPASSING APPROACH TO WIRE PULLING

Van Meter helped Knobelsdorff pull the medium voltage wire more efficiently in a couple ways. First, Van Meter introduced them to time-saving Southwire tools like these:

While wire pulling tools are helpful, using certain components without a full solution can do more harm than good. More than parts, Van Meter partnered with Knobelsdorff to bring a full solution together with pre-planning and jobsite services that allowed them to hit the ground running when they got to site.

For example, rather than having to unload and transport three heavy A-Frame reels of wire, Knobelsdorff was able to pull the wire from Van Meter’s truck, which was pulling a large flatbed, directly into the termination cabinet.

RESULT: A SIMPLER, MORE EFFICIENT WIRE PULL

How much time did they save? Van Meter’s wire and cable solutions can decrease installation time by 50% with 33% less manpower. With factory installed pulling heads, the wire ready to pull from the truck and the XD10 wire tugger, which doesn’t need to be bolted down, Knobelsdorff was able to start pulling wire as soon as the wire arrived on site. What could have been a four-to-six-hour project took less than two hours to complete.
