Survive and Thrive when Temperatures Dive: Tips for Staying Warm on the Job

Your phone says it is a balmy eight degrees outside, snow covers the driveway and your windshield is frosted over. You grab your thermos and your boots because duty calls.

For many of us, working in frigid temperatures is part of the job. It can be uncomfortable and at times, even dangerous. With risks like frostbite and hypothermia, it is important to have the right gear to stay warm and safe. Here are some tips for surviving and thriving for the rest of the winter.

Tip #1: Layer Loosely

While you do not need to look like Ralphie’s brother walking to school in A Christmas Story (moving your arms is important!), dressing in layers is the best way to stay warm. Three layers of loose-fitting clothing provides the best insulation, as they keep moisture away from the body, while protecting from the elements. Layers also offer more flexibility, allowing you to shed them throughout the day. We offer sweatshirts and waterproof jackets in high-visibility colors, so you can stay warm and visible no matter how bundled up you are.

Tip #2: Defend Your Digits

In cold conditions, most of the body’s energy is used to keep the internal core warm. The body does this by shifting blood flow from the hands, feet, arms and legs to the chest and abdomen. That is why frostbite attacks the extremities first. Reddened skin, numbness, blistering and hardened skin are signs of frostbite. To avoid those symptoms, keep your fingers and toes covered and protected from moisture. Try wearing insulated gloves and insulated, waterproof boots to protect your hands and feet.

Tip #3: Heat Your Head

Heat can escape the body through the top of the head, so it is important to wear a hat to reduce the amount of heat you are losing. Winter hats even come in high-visibility options for an added layer of safety. Frostbite can also target the nose and ears. Try wearing a wearing a balaclava to protect the nose, ears, neck and face from the wind and cold.
